Why use a football league maker instead of a spreadsheet

A football league is more than a table of points. Someone has to draw up fixtures where nobody plays twice on the same matchday, keep track of who scored and who was booked, know who is suspended next week, and settle ties on points without an argument. The “Football” sport comes set up for all of that: 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw by default, goals with scorer and assist, yellow and red cards, and line-ups for 11, 7 or 5-a-side.

  • Fixtures in one click: single or double round robin (home and away), balanced so that home and away games alternate and byes are spread evenly when the number of teams is odd.
  • Live league table: points, goal difference and the tiebreakers you choose, recalculated with every result.
  • Top scorers, assists and cards: record who scored, who set it up and who was booked; the player stats build themselves.
  • Automatic suspensions: set the yellow card threshold, and bans for accumulation and red cards are worked out from each player’s record and served in the next match.
  • Divisions with promotion and relegation: split the league into divisions and, when you open the next season, the top teams go up and the bottom ones go down.

How to make a football league step by step

  1. Create a free account. Sign up in under a minute; no card required.
  2. Create the competition with the “Football” sport. Pick the format: a classic league, a league with end-of-season playoffs, or groups followed by a knockout cup. Points for a win, draw and loss (3/1/0 by default) can be changed.
  3. Add the teams and their squads. Add each club with its badge and its players with shirt numbers, or share a join code so each manager registers their own team.
  4. Generate the fixtures. The tool creates every matchday in one go. Then give each match its date, kick-off time and pitch, or leave it for later.
  5. Enter scores, scorers and cards. After each game, enter the score and, if you want, the scorers, assists and cards. The table, top scorers and suspensions update instantly on the league’s public page.

A worked example: a 12-team Sunday league, home and away

Take a Sunday league with 12 teams playing each other home and away. Each team faces the other 11 twice: that’s 22 matchdays with 6 games each, 132 matches in total, and every team plays 11 at home and 11 away. A team that wins 14, draws 4 and loses 4 finishes on 46 points; if two teams end level, the table applies the criteria you set in the order you chose — head-to-head, goal difference, goals scored. With 22 matchdays, the default threshold of 5 yellows is rarely reached; 3 yellows for a one-match ban fits this length better, and you can set it when you create the league. At the end of the season, open a new one: if the league has two divisions, the top 2 of the second division swap places with the bottom 2 of the first, and the fixtures for the new season are generated again.

Tips for running a football league

  • Write the rules down before matchday one: points, tiebreakers and the card threshold should be published before kick-off; changing them halfway through always causes complaints.
  • Record cards every week, not only when there’s trouble: suspensions only work if every booking is on the match report.
  • Postpone, don’t redo: when a game is called off, move that match to a new date; the rest of the fixtures stay as they are and the table recalculates itself.
  • Share one link, not screenshots: the league’s public page shows the table, results, fixtures and top scorers to anyone, without signing up, so every team looks at the same version.

Common mistakes when making a football league

  • Hand-made fixtures: it’s easy to give one team three away games in a row or two byes close together; the generator balances home, away and byes for you.
  • Copying the TV card rules: five yellows makes sense over 38 matches; in a 10 or 20-match league almost nobody gets there, so the rule does nothing.
  • No tiebreakers decided: teams level on points happen every season; decide in advance whether head-to-head or goal difference comes first.
  • Too many teams for the dates you have: every extra team adds matchdays; if the season is short, play a single round robin or split into two groups with a final.

League, league + playoffs or cup: which format?

A league is the fairest format: everyone plays everyone and the most consistent team wins. League + playoffs keeps the last matchdays alive for mid-table teams and ends the season with a final. A cup (knockouts, or groups then knockouts) crowns a champion in a few rounds and suits a weekend tournament or a competition that runs alongside the league; drawn knockout ties can be settled on penalties. If you just want to see the fixtures before signing up, the free schedule generator builds them without an account.

Frequently asked questions

Is the football league maker free?

Yes. Creating the league, generating fixtures, entering results and sharing the table is free and needs no card.

Does it work for 7-a-side and 5-a-side?

Yes. The “Football” sport has line-ups for 11-a-side (4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-5-2…), 7-a-side and 5-a-side, and everything else — fixtures, table, scorers, cards — works the same.

Can the league be played home and away?

Yes. You can generate a single round robin or a double one with home and away matches, and add end-of-season playoffs.

How are yellow card suspensions handled?

You set the threshold (5 by default, or 0 for no accumulation bans) and whether a double yellow counts towards it. Bans for accumulation and red cards are calculated automatically and served in the next match.

Can I have several divisions with promotion and relegation?

Yes. Split the competition into divisions and choose how many teams go up and down; when you open a new season you get an editable preview of the moves before confirming.

Can I record goalscorers and assists?

Yes. Each goal can have a scorer and an assist, and the league shows the top scorers table and each player’s stats.

Can I make a fictional league or a league for a football video game?

Yes. For a league with friends on a football video game, use the “eSports (Football)” sport, which allows teams or individual players.

Can players and fans see the table without an account?

Yes. Every league has a public page with the table, results, fixtures and top scorers that anyone with the link can open on their phone.
